Why isn’t my child being called on castings?

Why are you looking at a photo of my feet ? Well if you know me well you know I hardly take a moment to myself. I never go to the salon or get my toes done. Not much free time for this busy lady.

However, today I decided ( thanks to my assistant and friend Emily ) to get a pedicure.

Why do some kids get called on castings all the time and it seems my child is rarely called?

This question seems to be one of the most asked questions among parents. To be honest there is no simple answer. I can give you my perspective and my thought process as to what I look for and hopefully it can help you better understand .

Let’s start with the casting process.

When a casting Director is holding a casting they typically hold it in one of two ways .

One, they tell an agency I have a certain amount of spots I can give your agency please send your top kids that fit the role description. Two, they say please submit all your kids that fit the role description and we will pick who we would like to see.

When they ask me to send my top kids here is where the question is asked ??

As a parent did you do your part? Did you send your child to acting classes , have you updated headshots , have you updated stats, and are you the kind of parent that will jump to take your child to almost every casting. If you said yes to these questions chances are your child is considered a top pick . You have to remember an agency parent relationship is a co-working relationship not just what can I do for you . If I know your putting in the work I will equally put in the work for you. If your a parent that is always unavailable , your stats are outdated , and your not attending any acting classes I’m simply going to choose a child who does. All in all this is a business and child who is trained has a higher probability of booking a job.

Now comes the question? If it is a submission and the casting Director is making the choice why is my child not chosen . Sometimes this can be the luck of the draw. Do you have a headshot that stands out ? If that Casting Director offers classes have you taken them so they recognize your child when they are being submitted? In other words …Have you done your part ? Sometimes you have to be exactly the look a Casting Director is looking for or sometimes the client goes in another direction .The truth is , sometimes yes you have done all of the above and you still were not chosen and let’s face it you can’t win them all . If you won at everything it might take the fun out of winning, wouldn’t it ? Enjoy the ride and savor the moments that your lucky enough to be picked as it’s a competitive market out there.

Interview with Sprout Kids Agency owner Shaina Miller

About three years ago, Sprout Kids Agency owner, Shaina Miller, received a phone call that would impact her life in more ways than she could possibly imagine. Ashley Brown, Founder of Selfless Love Foundation, was looking for help with photos. Shaina, who is also a photographer, offered to help Ashley with her project. What Shaina didn’t know at that moment was that a simple photoshoot would sprout into a passion for giving back. Here is an inside look at how popular, Miami-based Sprout Kids Agency began their partnership with the Selfless Love Foundation.

What is Selfless love?

Selfless Love Foundation is dedicated to changing the lives of foster youth. They focus on two areas which include current and former foster youth in which they provide supportive housing and resources for former foster youth, and help find forever families for children in foster care.

How did you first get involved with Selfless love?

“Ashley Brown was a mutual friend with the late, great Andre Rowe, my mentor. Selfless Love was looking for a photographer for their adults program Browns Harbor. Before opening up Sprouts Kids Agency in Miami, and even before getting into the South Florida modeling and acting market, I was a photographer.”

How has Selfless Love Changed your life?

“There was just nothing like meeting everyone face to face. You hear of foundations, and yes they touch you, or at least to me they did… but meeting them? My goodness, it makes my hair raise. These kids just put your life into perspective. Anything and everything I was going through just instantly shrank. Everything is small in comparison. Each time I go there, I feel like I’m floating. It takes me at least two week to come down. These kids, and the moments I’ve experienced, I will never forget. There isn’t a time I have gone that hasn’t been just as life changing as the time before. It is magical. The feeling I get when I receive a phone call that a child gets placed into their forever home is just priceless.”

How is Sprout Kids Agency giving back?

“Along with still providing photographs of the kids, Sprout Kids Agency donates 1% of their profits to the Selfless Love Foundation. We are also creating awareness by promoting them on all of our social media channels and in every email we send out; this way we can reach everyone: casting directors, clients, and aspiring child models and actors. The more people who we can share Selfless Love’s mission with, the better.”

Are there any exciting new plans to collaborate in the future?

“We travel a few times a year throughout the US to photograph the kids looking for a home via Family Match . We will also be hosting drives periodically so that the kids can see firsthand how much everyone at Sprout Kids Agency cares about them.”
